Controlling Your Environment - The 5 Step Strategy You're Probably Not Using

10/12/2016

Life’s too important to leave it to chance. If you’re reading this then you clearly want to feel awesome physically and mentally. You may not necessarily want to become an olympic athlete, but you just want to be the best version of yourself. What with so many distractions, advertisements and the influence of those around us, being the best version of you can sometimes be hard to achieve.

I personally love improving, learning and developing different areas of my life. I’m constantly tweaking the little things and asking myself the right questions to get to where I want to be.

An often overlooked strategy I use personally & implement with all of my 1 on 1 clients is giving people the tools to control their environment. I have put together 5 of the most popular areas to focus on.

  1. Create a soundtrack to your life - Music has the ability to enhance any situation, I want you to create playlists and soundtracks for every part of your day. You may have a pre workout playlist which you play on your way to your workout. You could create de-stress soundtrack which you play 10 minutes before you walk through your front door after a long day. Some of my clients have had amazing results by simply listening to calm music at lunch which helps them not overeat and make sensible choice. Think of your daily habits and things you do on a regular basis and create a playlist to help you progress.

  2. Choose your workout setting - Do you really want to be training in the sweaty basement gym in a busy part of London? Ask yourself where you really want to workout. You could run by the river or with the wild deer in Richmond park, cycle by the olympic stadium, swim in the heated Lidos. The choice is yours, just be inspired by your surroundings.

  3. Reduce Friction. Make it easy for yourself, pack your workout clothes the night before, prep your food for the week ahead, put your multi-vitamins in a nice box with the days on, get your smoothie machine out and ready, save your motivational pins on pinterest. Just reduce as much of the friction you may face, and make being healthy as easy as you possibly can.

  4. Increase friction. Remove all of your junk food, limit distractions, sell your TV, make it hard for yourself to do the things that you know aren’t good for you.

  5. Routine and systems - Reduce your overthinking and create systems. The less you have to think about something the better. Design your workout plan, write it down, and then just do it. Plan your weeks meals in advance, write them down and then just do it. It’s so simple, but really effective. Create systems that are effective, easy to follow and require very little thinking time on your behalf.

These are just 5 ideas on how you can control your environment which will instantly have a positive effect on your health and fitness. Take one thing at a time, get passionate about it, and then move on to the next thing. Try, test and tweak until your strategies are perfect for you.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on this, if you have any other ideas, or what works for you.
