Meet Richard - Head Trainer at the New Swift Boot Camp in Birmingham

We're really excited as in January 2018 we're launching Swift Fitness in Birmingham. We're going to be introducing a weekly timetable of awesome boot camp sessions, as well as offering mobile personal training around the Birmingham area. 

We welcome Richard Smith to the team, who has taken on a Swift Franchise. Rich isn't just any old personal trainer. He's a former RAF medic, all round top guy, and used to go to college with Sam Warrington (Swift Founder). 

We sat down with Rich to hear why he became a PT, what his first week was like in the RAF, and where he'd take an alien if it landed on his doorstep. 
Tell us about your family unit, and what it’s like being a dad?

​"My family unit consists of myself, my wife Nicola and our 2 year old daughter Amelia. My wife works full time as a Nurse and I look after our daughter alongside my fitness business Becoming a dad was the best thing and proudest moment of my life and the happiness our daughter brings us is all we could ever want."

You grew up in North Devon, tell us more, and what’s your favourite thing about it?

"North Devon always will hold a special place in my heart my family and friends are still down there and I will always return. My favourite thing about North Devon is the great outdoors in particular the amazing beaches."

What made you join the RAF, and what was the first week like?

"I wanted to join the RAF because of what was happening out in Afghanistan, I wanted to make a difference which is why I chose to become a medic so I could have a direct impact helping others.

The first week was full on full of challenges and living away from home. However the new challenge was enjoyable and one I relished."
If an alien landed on your doorstep and they asked you to show them the best thing about Birmingham, what would you show them?

"I would show them the fantastic open spaces and country parks Birmingham probably isn’t so well known for. As well as the vibrant nightlife and excellent music venues such as the Birmingham Arena. I'd also obviously take them for a workout at boot camp!"
What made you want to become a personal trainer?

"I became a personal train to experience a new challenge and to continue to help people and have a positive impact on their lives and help them achieve their goals."
What’s the best bit about being a fitness professional?

"The best bit is getting to meet a variety of people from all walks of life and see their happiness as they achieve their goals."
Who’s your fitness/sporting icons & why?

"My sporting icons are Anthony Joshua and Mo Farah because they constantly work hard to be the best they can be. Whilst they have hit the heights of becoming World and Olympic champions they continue to dream and set new goals to become even better."
If you had to pick 3 bits of advice for someone who wants to be fitter, healthier and happier, what would they be?

"I would say believe in yourself. don’t worry about what others think, focus on you. You can achieve anything you put your mind too, the sky is the limit."
If you could pick one celebrity to train, who would it be?

"Ricky Gervais"

If you could pick one celebrity to definitely NOT train, who would it be?

"Jeremy Clarkson"

What’s your go to healthy dinner?

"Chicken Breast with a portion of mozzarella on brown rice with spinach broccoli and kale"
